FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

01. If I win an award for work related to my studies, who should I tell?

If you win an award based on work you did for a class or with the help of any professor, you should first let the professor know. News about student awards that are bestowed by organizations outside of the university are usually shared with the unviersity community through the college communications manager. Students winning external awards relating to their programs of study are encouraged to contact hrchadwi@vt.edu.

02. How would I go about switching into the architecture program?

We refer to currently enrolled Virginia Tech undergraduate students wishing to change their major and transfer into architecture, industrial design, interior design or landscape architecture as “internal transfers.” Applications are required and available in the School of Architecture + Design office at the beginning of the spring semester. You may pick up an application in 201 Cowgill Hall or access the application online. Please review the internal transfer process for further information (Internal Transfer Process).

03. How do I sign up for study abroad?

The variety of study abroad opportunities in the college are administered by various schools in the college. To find out which school to contact, start by talking to Wendy Vaughn, enrollment services assistant, at (540) 231-6415 or vaughnw@vt.edu.

04. I'm going to study elsewhere this summer. How do get that credit toward my degree?

First, talk to your adivsor to see if what you are planning can be used for credit toward your degree. You can also check with the registrar's website for additional information.

05. Can I withdraw from a course?

Undergraduate students can withdraw up to six hours while at Virginia Tech. To find out how, contact Wendy Vaughn, enrollment services assistant, at (540) 231-6415 or vaughnw@vt.edu.

06. Can I change an exam time?

07. Is a portfolio required for admission to programs in the School of Architecture + Design?

No. Our foundation design laboratories (ARCH 1015, 1016) provide the design fundamentals needed to be a successful designer. Admissions are primarily based on a student’s grade point average and SAT or ACT score. 08. Is a portfolio required for admission to programs in the School of Visual Arts?

Yes.Portfolio requirements differ between visual communication design/graphic design and studio art. For complete information about both, go to Portfolio Review on the School of Visual Arts website.
